Family Portrait Testimonials

“We wanted a photographer that could capture our family in a place that we all McCall Familylove.  We found Douglas and were impressed by his preparation and thoughtfulness to the entire process before we even got to Maui.  Hiring a photography with real experience not a hobbyist was our number one goal.  Douglas was so laid back, thoughtful and easy to work with for our entire family.  He found out what we wanted  yet allowed his gift of telling a story of our family to be the final product.   He even got one of our girls to give him her real smiles which is gold to her parents.  Our family (even the girls) enjoyed the entire process and the pictures were beyond all our expectations.  We know that the pictures he captured will be lifelong treasures to our family.”

“Our family would like to thank you for capturing some of our best memories yet!  On our very first family vacation to Hawaii, we were fortunate to meet you and couldn’t be more pleased with the results.  We have never seen so many wonderful pictures of our family captured in one sitting.  The canvas prints we bought are absolutely gorgeous and are truly a family heirloom that we will treasure for years to come.  Thank you for preserving some beautiful memories for us.  We look forward to meeting you again on our next trip to Maui.”

“We want to thank you for the outstanding pictures of our family on the occasion of our 50th wedding anniversary. We knew we wanted to have a good photographer take our family pictures while in Maui and we feel so fortunate to have found you. We worked together for almost 2 years prior to the event and  you made the entire experience fun and enjoyable. We love our “coffee table book” and the large portraits which will adorn our homes for years to come. Thank you for preserving memories that will last forever.”

The works of art that Doug created for our family represent unique, meaningful and beautiful memories of our time on Maui. They will take pride of place in our home back in Canada.

“My name is Susan Garner and I live in Southern Illinois. My family has been visiting the Hawaiian Islands since 1993. The years have quickly flown by and as soon as my son entered high school, I began thinking about his senior portraits. I like to bedifferent. I wanted a unique experience but the “perfect” idea eluded me. I talked about it a lot and one day, out of the blue, my husband said, “Why don’t you have his pictures taken in Maui.” That is how our journey began. I visited so many photography websites that I became overwhelmed and discouraged until I found Douglas Hoffman of Maui Photography. His passion for his work was so evident I knew my search was over. In the months leading up to our session, I spoke with Doug several times so he would have an idea of what my vision was and he could get to know my family. Our session was unlike anything we had ever experienced. Not one time did we hear, turn your head an inch, shoulders back, chin up or any of the usual comments from a photographer posing a family in an unnatural way. Doug captured our personalities not just a picture. I knew after the session was over that he would deliver the vision that had been in my mind for so many months and he did not disappoint. At the preview, my husband and I were both emotional viewing the amazing photographs of our family. It was truly the experience of a lifetime and there are no words to express my gratitude to Doug and his staff for making my dream a reality.”

“Lynn and I want you to know how much we appreciate and enjoy all of the family pictures you made during our recent visit to Maui. We particularly love the “entire family” picture wherein we are all looking towards the camera. That particular picture has taken its permanent place on our great room mantel. It is beautiful! David could not have selected a better, professional Portraitist. Thank you and your staff very much; particularly your pleasant and pretty wife.”

Having taken a variety of photography tours/classes, Douglas distinguished himself right away. Through conversation and a few questions he learned that we knew enough to take our lens caps off before we shot. So instead of a canned lesson plan, we got exactly what we wanted. Which was a focus on the artistic side of photography.

It was great being able to take the Road to Hanna with a local. His knowledge of the area as one would expect was outstanding.

Besides learning about composition, “S” curves and the like, Douglas was just fun to chat with. A great sense of humor combined with good coaching skills made for an experience that we will remember for a long time.

What a great experience. Not only did I learn a lot about how to take great pictures Doug also took me to places I wouldn’t have seen. Can’t wait to put my new skills to good use.

I took a 2 week photo class with Douglas Hoffman (the owner). I will say that Doug not only is a great photographer but is also a tremendous and patient instructor. I went from zero knowledge of cameras to not only understanding my camera but also about photo composition and turning a picture into a work of art. I highly recommend his class.

I knew that my trip to Maui was going to epic but what I did not know was that my time spent with Douglas would turn this total newbie into an artist in just one day. Douglas was able to transform my abilities and skill level with a camera from just your average snap shooter into an actual photographer in just one workshop.

Now, I am not claiming that I am ready to go pro by any means but the photos I shot with Douglas are top notch and in my mind pretty dang close to being gallery worthy.

From the onset, Douglas honed in on my learning style (visual/practice) and showed my how to set myself free from the typical Automatic/JPEG mode that I normally shoot in and introduced me to the world of Manual/RAW photography. From there, we started talking about composition, lighting, shutter speeds and much more. Let’s put it this way… In one 8 Hour workshop I learned at least a semesters worth of knowledge had I taken a class at a local community college.

Not only was the workshop packed with technical knowledge, Douglas was a true professional in every aspect. Ever eager to answer any questions and offer constructive criticisms that made me a much better overall photographer not only on this trip but for life.

If you are planning a trip to Maui and dream of taking some amazing art worthy images, I highly recommend Douglas Hoffmann’s Photo Workshops. Not only is Douglas a fantastic instructor but he is now a life long friend and mentor that I will visit again in the future. Possibly on one of his underwater photography workshops…

This was our 2nd 4 hour Sunset tour with Doug. The 1st was on the South side and this one on the West near his beautiful gallery. Be sure to visit his gallery. We scouted for photo ops at Honoloa Bay, Dragon’s teeth and finishing at the old Mala Pier for sunset. I always strive to improve my knowledge and Doug really focus’s on seeing the picture before looking into your camera and seeing the composition creatively. I have not typically approached photography this way. On the last tour Doug encouraged the use of Graduating Neutral Density Filters which I purchased before this trip. They really help creative compositions. What I learned was the use of very slow shutter speeds combined with the adjustment to higher ISO’s at the same time varying the aperture with the different shutter speeds. Doug’s techniques are so personalized to the lighting scenario. He stimulated my mind to re-think how I approach photography which I will put into practice!

A few years ago we toured south Maui with Douglas and were so impressed we hired him again to help us photograph west Maui. We learned a lot about composition and how to look for certain visual interests to improve any photograph. The only thing I regret is that we didn’t ask him to take a quick photo of us for a keepsake.

Enjoyed a terrific day with Douglas traveling the road to Hana and finding amazing photo opportunities. He was really helpful with composition and the use of GND and ND filters which allowed us to shoot from sunrise to midday and beyond. In his own right he is one of our foremost whale photographers and it’s worth going to his gallery to see his unique work. He is fun to be with, not intimidating at all, expensive but totally worth the investment. Just do it!!

If you want to learn how to take amazing pictures with your DSLR this is the event for you. Doug not only teaches you how to use your camera but he is amazing at teaching composition. He is patient with you, makes it all about you instead of him and he takes you to places you probably would never otherwise see. He is not only a terrific instructor, amazing photographer but a great person to spend the day with. I spent the day with him and a couple others in February and the retention of knowledge is excellent because of the way he teaches. I will definitely spend time with him again learning new tips and tricks next February when I return to Maui.

I just repeated the sunrise photo tour and although we repeated some of the sites some were different. And the light and wave action was totally different which made for new photos. Also it gave me a chance to improve on previous photos. I cannot wait to get home and see my results. Thank You Douglas.
