A picture is worth a 1000 words.

Panorama from student

I received an email with this image yesterday from Peter Coad, a recent workshop participant.   This is what he said…..  When I see the portrait I see that he used the elements of composition that we worked on turing our day together.  I am so happy to see Peter apply these concepts as …

Sunset workshops are all about the light and motion of the ocean

DSC_5491.web

Sunsets in Maui can be truly breathing. The colors in the sky can be intense beyond words, and sometimes subtle beyond description. Regardless of the quality of light, the way the waves hit the shore can be slowed down allowing motion to become part of the image design.   When you combine light and motion, …

North Shore of Maui is an incredible place for landscape photography

Every day the view is different as the weather and tides constantly change. This is one of the things that excites me as a photographer. I look at a scene and think about composition and how to tell the story of this place and this moment in time.  This helps me see the image well …

Sunset along Maui’s Southern Coast

Ahihi bay sunset.web

On a recent Maui workshop we selected a stretch of coastline in Makena, that provided a nice view of Maui’s rocky coastline. A Lee graduated neutral density filter was used to control the quantity of light above the horizon. Working with filters allows the photographer to control light and exercise creativity.  I carry a variety of filters in …

Makena Sunset

Makena Maui

I created in Wailea Maui about a week ago. I used a 3 stop graduated Neutral density filter and a long shutter speed in order to incorporate the motion of the ebbing tide in the composition. The graduated filter allowed me to control the amount of light coming into the camera and slow the shutter …

Creativity is at your fingertips

One of my favorite locations for photography

Creating stunning images is a function of composition and exposure, light and shadows. These days however it is relatively easy for photographers to use software like Nik, Topaz, and OnOne to add painterly affects and texture to enhance an image during post processing. On this image I used Topaz and within two minutes, added texture …
